Lake Michigan plane crash victims

Lake Michigan plane crash victimsLUDINGTON, Mich. – Authorities called off their search Saturday for four people missing since a small plane plunged into Lake Michigan a day earlier while flying a cancer patient to the Mayo Clinic.

The pilot, 66-year-old Jerry Freed of Alma, was rescued following the crash Friday morning several miles off the west Michigan coast. After combing the area for 27 hours, rescuers concluded there was little chance anyone else had survived, said Petty Officer Brandon Blackwell of the U.S. Coast Guard's district headquarters in Cleveland.

"We can resume a search if credible information is received that persons missing may be alive," Blackwell told The Associated Press. "At this point, we saturated an area that's approximately 1,000 square miles ... and we've turned up nothing."

Also aboard the plane were co-pilot Earl Davidson, Alma school superintendent Don Pavlik, his wife Irene, and Dr. James Hall. All were residents of Alma, a central Michigan town 150 miles northwest of Detroit.

Don Pavlik was diagnosed earlier this year with cancer of the esophagus, said Tony Costanzo, the school board's vice president. Freed and Davidson had offered to fly Pavlik to the medical center in Rochester, Minn., for treatment, he said. Hall went along to help his ailing friend, Costanzo said.

Freed was released from the Memorial Medical Center in Ludington Saturday afternoon, hospital spokesman Bill Kerans said. He said Freed was denying interview requests.

The plane took off from Alma about 9 a.m. Friday. Less than an hour later, Freed reported mechanical problems to the air traffic control tower in Minneapolis, said the Federal Aviation Administration, which was investigating the crash.

Battling a strong headwind over the lake, Freed decided to return to Michigan, said a statement from the Mason County emergency management office. It said the passengers were prepared for an emergency landing.

Freed's wife, Carol, told the Ludington Daily News her husband had checked the plane Thursday in preparation for the trip and had no concerns. She told the AP that Jerry Freed had flown many people to the Mayo Clinic over the years.

The lake's surface temperature was an estimated 68 degrees Friday and waves were 2 to 4 feet, authorities said.

Mason County Undersheriff Tom Trenner said Saturday that prospects weren't good for surviving more than a day in such chilly water.

"At some point it will move from an active search to a recovery mode, where we're looking to recover bodies," Trenner said.

State police dive teams were using sonar devices to find the sunken plane.

The U.S. and Canadian Coast Guards provided helicopters and fixed-wing planes for the search. Coast Guard boats were joined by vessels from the Mason and Oceana County sheriff's departments and Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment, along with number of volunteer boaters.

The search had gone on throughout Friday night. A bright moon and powerful searchlights gave crews a good view of the water's surface, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Chris Legard, who was aboard a 25-foot craft based in Ludington.

The water was choppy early in the evening but grew calm later, Legard said.

If any survivors "were close to us, we would have been able to see them," he said.

18 killed in mass panic at Germany's Love Parade

Word NewsDUISBURG, Germany – Crowds of people streaming into a techno music festival surged through an already jammed entry tunnel on Saturday, setting off a panic that killed 18 people and injured 80 at an event meant to celebrate love and peace.

The circumstances of the stampede at the famed Love Parade festival in Duisburg in western Germany were still not clear even hours after the chaos, but it appeared that some or most of the 18 had been crushed to death.

Authorities also suggested that some of the people killed or injured might have attempted to flee the crowd by jumping over a barrier and falling several meters (yards). Witnesses described a desperate scene, as people piled up on each other or scrambled over others who had fallen in the crush.

"The young people came to celebrate and instead there are dead and injured," said Chancellor Angela Merkel. "I am horrified by the suffering and the pain."

Criticism quickly fell on city officials for allowing only one entrance to the grounds of a hugely popular event that drew hundreds of thousands of people to dance, watch floats and listen to DJs spin. German media said 1.4 million people attended but that figure could not be immediately confirmed.

The founder of the Love Parade, Matthias Roeingh, known by the name Dr. Motte, blasted the planning for the event, saying "one single entrance through a tunnel lends itself to disaster. I am very sad."
_______________

Word NewsCity officials chose not to evacuate the site, fearing it might spark more panic, and many people continued partying, unaware of the deaths.

Emergency workers had trouble getting to the victims, hampered by the huge crowds. The area was a hectic scene, with bodies lying on the ground and people milling around or attending to them. Rescue workers carried away the injured as techno music thundered in the background.

Local media reported that the cell phone system in Duisburg broke down temporarily and frantic parents trying to reach their children instead drove to the scene to look for them.

However, most streets downtown were blocked by police and the highways leading to the city were jammed. Several media outlets also reported that rescue helicopters had problems taking away the heavily injured because there was not enough space for them to land.

Authorities believe the panic might have first been sparked outside the tunnel when some revelers tried to jump over a barrier and fell, said Wolfgang Rabe, the head of the crisis unit set up by Duisburg city authorities.

Police commissioner Juergen Kieskemper said that just before the stampede occurred at about 5 p.m. (1500 GMT, 11 a.m. EDT), police closed off the area where the parade was being held because it was already overcrowded. They told revelers over loudspeakers to turn around and walk back in the other direction before the panic broke out, he said.

Eyewitness Udo Sandhoefer told n-tv television that even though no one else was being let in, people still streamed into the tunnel, causing "a real mass panic."

"At some point the column (of people) got stuck, probably because everything was closed up front, and we saw that the first people were already lying on the ground," he said.

"Others climbed up the walls and tried somehow to get into the grounds from the side, and the people in the crowd that moved up simply ran over those who were lying on the ground."

Another witness, a young man who wasn't named, told n-tv the tunnel became so crowded that people began falling. "It got tighter and tighter from minute to minute and at some point everyone just wanted out," he said. "People were just pushed together until they fell over."

Duisburg city officials decided at a crisis meeting to let the parade go on to prevent more panic and another stampede, said city spokesman Frank Kopatschek.

It is the worst accident of its kind since nine people were crushed to death and 43 more were injured at a rock festival in Roskilde, Denmark, in 2000. That fatal accident occurred when a huge crowd pushed forward during a Pearl Jam gig.

The Love Parade was once an institution in Berlin, but has been held in the industrial Ruhr region of western Germany since 2007.

The original Berlin Love Parade grew from a 1989 peace demonstration into a huge outdoor celebration of club culture that drew about 1.5 million people at its peak in 1999. But it suffered from financial problems and tensions with city officials in later years, and eventually moved.

The website of the Love Parade — whose motto this year was "The Art of Love — went black on Saturday night, with words in white saying:

"Our wish to arrange a happy togetherness was overshadowed by the tragic accidents today. ... Our sincere condolences to all the relatives and our thoughts are with all of those who are currently being taken care of."

Kristina Hagan Sues David Boreanaz For Sexual Harassment, Attempted Boning

Hollywood Gossip

As we reported yesterday, actor and sex scandal magnet David Boreanaz is being sued by an actress who claims he harassed her during filming of his show, Bones.

The woman, Kristina Hagan, has now been identified.

Filed by Gloria Allred, the sexual harassment lawsuit claims the misconduct began during filming in August 2009, with "sexually inappropriate text messages."

Kristina Hagan was an extra on the Fox show at the time, and developed some sort of relationship with David Boreanaz - it's not clear if it was physical at all.

But the suit claims Boreanaz was driving with Kristina in September, 2009 and told her he was "the boss" and that he could "make things happen for her."

According to the lawsuit, Boreanaz continually told Hagan he was trying to find a role for her, but never delivered. That's when it really gets good/bad ...

The suit claims Boreanaz then parked his car, and "attempted to kiss her and touch her breasts but she pushed him away." The suit then alleges David "unzipped his pants, pulled out his penis and began stroking it until he ejaculated."

Another encounter allegedly occurred with Hagan in David's trailer on September 29 of last year, according to court documents. Once again Hagan claims Boreanaz grabbed, kissed, and fondled her - and then "masturbated in front of her."

Then the suit alleges in October, Boreanaz, who famously had an affair with Rachel Uchitel, told Hagan "he and his wife had argued because there were reports of his infidelity" coming out - and that he and Hagan would have to "cool it."

Kristina is also suing Fox and Bones' production company for failing to take corrective action against Boreanaz. The actor's rep told TMZ in a statement:

"The allegations concerning any alleged inappropriate conduct by David Boreanaz are totally fabricated and absurd. There is no validity to this lawsuit."

Katy Perry: Nude on "Teenage Dream" Cover

It's not the first time we've seen Katy Perry nude, nor will it be the last. But the pop star certainly made sure her new album, Teenage Dream, was aptly named.

On the just-revealed cover for her upcoming album, she reveals some serious skin, naked and flat on her belly, with a thin cloud strategically placed just right.

Katy, who recently compared Miley to Britney, certainly isn't shy about using her own sexuality to sell music. In fact, of her top two assets, neither is her voice.

Just saying.

According to the future Mrs. Russell Brand, the forthcoming album will "smell like cotton candy." Sounds really sweet. As sweet as her topless Esquire spread?

You'll have to be the judge of that ...

Zac Efron Lands at JFK Ahead of Big Apple Promotions

Hollywood GossipGearing up for Big Apple promotional efforts, Zac Efron was spotted arriving at JFK Airport in New York City on Saturday (July 24).

Fresh off of a visit to St. Louis, the hunky 22-year-old actor is in the midst of boosting interest in his new movie, "Charlie St. Cloud," which hits theaters next Friday, July 30th.

Recently talking about his attraction to the Burr Steers directed film, Efron told Parade magazine, “Every once in awhile, you read a script and you get that special feeling in your gut. I was touched by what the character, Charlie, goes through, and I thought it was a story worth sharing. And the fact that I have a little brother myself gave it a lot of resonance.”

Also dishing on a recent vacation to Hawaii in which he took with brother Dylan, Zac told, “[I] kicked off the summer by taking my little brother, Dylan, on a graduation trip to Hawaii. He’s going off to college next year, and I’ve been working very hard, so we haven’t been able to see each other as much as we would have liked to in the past few years. We hiked through the inner jungle in Maui, and you come across these really beautiful spots. We found this hidden place where there was an enormous waterfall and cliff jump. It was about a thirty-five foot drop.”

Dance fever sweeping through Israeli military

Dance fever sweeping through Israeli militaryRemember a few weeks back when a video featuring a group of U.S. soldiers stationed in Afghanistan performing their own version of Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” video stormed the Internet? Well, it looks like they’ve got some competition from their counterparts in the Israeli military, AFP reports.

You can watch the video--which has gone viral, and has since been edited with politically minded pop-up features protesting the conditions of the Israeli occupation of the West Bank city of Hebron--below:

The clip features six soldiers on patrol in Hebron, which is home to many sites that Jews, Muslims and Christians consider holy. Some 600 Israeli settlers live in the city among roughly 160,000 Palestinians — which means it has also been the site of tension over the Israeli occupation.

As the soldiers canvass the street with weapons in hand, a muezzin can be heard leading a call for Muslim prayers. Suddenly, Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok” abruptly comes on and the six soldiers break out into a dance routine. After a few seconds of hearty gyrating, the soldiers promptly return to their patrol duty and to appropriate military postures.

The Israeli Defense Forces brass is not amused, AFP reports: In a statement, the IDF leadership called the performance a “joke by the soldiers” that amounts to “inappropriate conduct during a military operation” and will be “investigated by battalion commanders.” The video, first posted to YouTube on Friday by the user "cleangrunge," has since disappeared from its original account — but several other users have reposted it.

Since women also serve in the Israeli army, it bears noting that they, too, have lately succumbed to a bit of dance fever. A video uploaded to YouTube on Monday allegedly features female Israeli soldiers shaking it to Avril Lavigne’s “Girlfriend.”

Joey Yung bravely walks on suspension bridge

Joey Yung was filming a commercial for Graffiti Collection earlier before this. She had to get to Philippines' Subic to take outdoor shots because their theme was " journey exploration", which not only required them to go into the forest, but also required Joey to walk on a suspension bridge. Joey who's usually hyper was so active moving here and there on the bridge, very experienced, but scared the crews until they had to tie her to ensure her safety.

Joey laughed and said, " I am very brave, I like to seek challenge the most. This time the advertisement requires me to go up and down, eventhough this is the most tiring job in my 10 years in the industry, but if I do not experience it myself how would I know that life is so fun."

Baywatch star Pamela Anderson to enter big brotherFormer "Baywatch" star Pamela Anderson is reportedly being lined up to enter the "Big Brother" house.

Anderson, 43, is reportedly being lined up to enter the Channel 4 compound in a bid to spice up the show and keep the male housemates entertained, reports newsoftheworld.co.uk.

"Pamela Anderson is one of the world's most iconic women. She oozes sex appeal and feistiness. If we can manage to get her into the house it will be a real coup. The boys on the show won't know what's hit them and we are certain it will make great television," said a source from the channel.

"Whatever happens a female celeb will be going in the house," the source added.

It is believed bosses on the show are seeking a celebrity 'cougar' - a woman over 40 known to have a penchant for younger men - to help make the final series finish in style.

As well as Pamela, former model Janice Dickinson, 55, and actress Brigitte Nielson, 46, are also apparently being considered.

"Whichever cougar we sign up to go into the house, you can be sure that it will liven up proceedings. They will be sexy, sassy and brash. Red-blooded 'Big Brother' fans are in for a real treat. We think all our other viewers will be pleased as sparks are bound to fly but we're not sure that the lads will want to be rescued from our cougar's grasp," said the source.

Alvina Kong exposes Angela Tong & Chin Ka Lok broke up

Earlier at Angela Tong's birthday party, because of one of the guests Alvina Kong's comment: "They already broke up" (Referring to Chin Ka Lok and Angela Tong), stirred up rumors that they broke up. Last night, Angela and Alvina attended a World Cup shopping mall event and were not embarrassed to see each other and requested for a group photo. Alvina explained again that the comment was just a joke. She also called Angela afterwards and apologize, and strongly insisted that Chin Ka Lok is not upset with her.

When reporters asked Angela if their relationship is stabled? She only laughed: "I never said anything, I'm very happy now!" Later reporters teased her again saying that she and Chin Ka Lok have going through another obstacle in their relationship, Angela vigorously shook her head. Reporters asked again if they broke up? Bosco Wong don't want to be Prince, can take any defamation

Bosco Wong recently released a new EP "Bravo" with good feedback from the public. Looks like he reached a stabled position in the music industry. Since TVB other biological son, Raymond Lam, stepped into the music industry, he had a smooth development and is even holding his second concert at Hong Kong Coliseum. Bosco strongly stressed that he and Raymond are two completely different artists in style. Their goals are different, so there will not be any fights nor will we be competitors.

Going down a different path from Raymond, Bosco explained: "I really envy his success, but we have different styles. Raymond is known as 'Prince Lam', one who really has the prince feel! I am more of the sunshine style, not a prince. My personality and style is different."

Is Bosco afraid that the public will compare him to Raymond? Bosco said: "Inevitable! My style is that I don't mind being defamed at all, can take it as a joke with others. However, Raymond is a pretty boy, not my style. On the surface, we have always seen to be huge competitors, but in reality our goals are different. He gives off the same feel as Louis Koo, while I'm more like Nick Cheung."

Speaking of rumored girlfriend Myolie Wu, her company is going through a huge change, has Myolie complained to him? Bosco half joked: "If she can't continue with her contract, then go find Mr. Lam. (Bosco's manager Lam Kin Ngok)"

Liza Wang told him and Myolie Wu to hurry up get marry and have kids? Bosco said that he is very shy, if he really does have a girlfriend, then he will really think about it. Does he already have progress with Myolie? He said: "No! Have we announced we're dating?" Did he buy a ring for Myolie? He said: "When I was young, I never understood the importance of rings in love. I once bought a ring for my girlfriend, but now I understand the important commitment coming from a ring." A way to pursue girls? He said: "Give me a break, I am only good friends with Myolie."

Adam Cheng Would Rap to Save 'Jade Solid Gold'

Because TVB and the four record companies haven't resolve their copyright tax incident, many singers cannot appear to "Jade Solid Gold," causing the show's rating to drop. "JSG" will make changes to regain its lost grounds. It would approach to veteran singers that don't belong to the four record companies like Adam Cheng and Liza Wang. Next month they would hold a a "Golden Songs Entertainment is Really Classic Concert" to save the show.

Yesterday Adam replied to reporters and said: "Don't dare to say I'm saving the show, 'JSG' is a music program, without that many singers it really isn't that good, but I heard 'the four' and TVB would resolve their matter soon. We don't know how many episodes we would do, but want to do something new, like rapping with MC Jin, I can do it. (Impersonating?) It would take too long to prepare!"

Anthony Wong Scolds Chrissie Chau is Brainless

Lang mo's photo albums are criticized as low class and inappropriate and are banned to promote in this year's book fair. Although Chrissie Chau and her juniors to launch words-only CopyBook, challenging HK Trade and Development Council, but still got rejected. Anthony Wong scolded lang mos are challenging bottom line of Hong Kong's morality. He even aimed at Chrissie, saying she isn't educated, no; smart but doesn't have great wisdom.

Anthony Wong attended to Chung King Fai's new book signing event yesterday. As for news of lang mo lately, he couldn't hold back and criticized. He believes lang mo's action is to challenge the whole Hong Kong, women groups, families, morals, and government: "There are some views in the society that cannot be deviated. Even prostitutes have to cover their necks when they protest on the streets, and they won't go to houses that have families and kids to protest. If they go there to protest, then it's crossing the boundary." Although related parties already banned lang mos promoting in book fair, and the problem seems to be solved, but Anthony believes it's an intentional problem, because they overestimated their intelligence.

Talked about Cathy Tsui look-a-like Debby posted a film of her shirt being ripped off online? Anthony said: "I didn't watch it, but I know about it. She is smart, shapes herself as a victim, her action is cunning, but she crossed the boundary." Whether he doesn't support lang mo, think they have a problem? He said: "Every occupation would be respected, but don't challenge. If the book fair turned out like that, I won't even go."

At night he criticized again in another event. This time he aimed at Chrissie Chu. He said if lang mo needs to appeal, they can ask Zi Teng (an organization that cares about sex workers) for help. There is a difference in civilization, high, low, and refined. Chrissie Chau has many ideas, but the stupidest thing is she challenges for the want of challenging. In the end it angered many people. Anthony used an example of customers aren't allowed to bring alcohol to coffee shops, but someone poured alcohol into water bottle, and walked in with it, trying to challenge, is it very smart? A smarty but doesn't have great wisdom, it's just like that when you aren't too educated.

Yesterday A.Lin and DaDa and 6 members of the New 8 Models attended to an event. As for Anthony's saying, A.Lin said first they're prostitutes and don't attack them. DaDa said they didn't challenge moral values, just some youthful photo albums. A.Lin said: "Now every veteran is criticizing us. Old models are criticizing us, too, I don't want to be a lang mo!" DaDa added: "So once a lang mo, I can't release books, taking away all of our opportunities?" Talked about they're banned to promote in book fair, they said there are elements of racism and would talk to their company, thinking about going to Equal Opportunities Commission to complain.

Recently Linda Chung has been getting lots of news, first she had insomnia for 3 months and then rumors that she has a crush on Steven Ma and now there are rumors that they are on bad terms. Recently Linda and Moses Chan have been busy filming for new TVB series "Yes Sir No Sir", the day before when they started working in Kowloon, the two were talking and laughing the whole time. Clearly they are collaborating very well.

Earlier when Linda was filming for "Ghost Writer", because she was unable to get out of character, she had insomnia for 3 months. Linda was later teased that the reason for her insomnia was because she had a crush on Steven. Then there were reports saying that Steven and Fala Chen teamed up to bully her, many negative news for Linda. Towards this, Linda yelled that its crazy! She also said she collaborated well with Steven and Fala, but actually the happiest for Linda is being be able to work with old partner Moses Chan again.

Linda and Moses were shooting for "Yes Sir No Sir" the other day the crew were filming in Kowloon. The scene was about Linda roaming the streets and then jumped into Moses car as they go on a joy ride together. Once Linda saw reporters, she happily waved towards the camera and posed with a V sign. Before filming, Linda was busy fixing her make-up, while Moses enjoyed a cup of coffee. Speaking of that, the two talked happily together, like old friends, so sweet.

Kate Tsui hits the rocks in singing becomes an orphan

After Myolie Wu and Linda Chung enters the music industry, Kate Tsui also officially enters the music industry last year with the help of TVB. Last year, Kate depended on her one fast song "Hit Me" heating up the music industry with her slapping patpat seductive dance. Kate's debut EP also received "2009 IFPI Record Sales - Most Popular Local Newcomer" and many other newcomer awards.

In the recent year, the music industry has fallen into depression. Yesterday sudden rumors broke out that Kate's record company Vigour Entertainment Asia decided to temporary stop music album production. According to rumors, the night before the publicist employee for Vigour received a layoff notice, making music newcomer queen Kate miserably becoming an orphan instantly. For the mean time, she has not found a new home (company).

Reporters contacted Vigour's boss (Cheung Tak Kwan) to ask about the rumors, he said honestly: "May or may not be true because Vigour currently reorganizing. (Great impact on the singers?) No because Vigour does not have many singers, but for now we really don't know. We'll know after the meeting next week." A senior publicist said: "Really? Where did you all hear this from? We cannot reveal anything now!"

Kate's TVB manager and also executive of artist department Virgina Lok expressed, kate and Vigour Asia contract already ended in May. Miss Lok said: "I don't believe they are stopping music production, I believe they're just reorganizing the company because 2 months ago, they discussed it with Ho Lai Chuen and I. They even revealed that they have good plans for the company."

Virgina is not worried about Kate's music career and expressed that Kate will not give up on singing, she said: "She took off from August - October to brush up her singing and dancing skills in Mainland. She's currently busy filming series and movies. As for music, no need to rush because it's not easy for a newcomer to release a debut album. To maintain the good results in the second album from the previous album is very hard. Besides Kate, Vigour is also interested in one or two more TVB artists. During this period, we will not sign Kate to a different record company, wait until they finish with their reorganization and find a compatible person, before we discuss a new contract."

No wonder Jade said: "I'm just making music" to indirectly get back at Fala, implying that she's just trying to get attention!

Virgina Lok and many other large station executives came to support them.

As Star Entertainment's boss, Herman Ho strongly denied that Sit Sai Hang is actually the big boss behind the company: "100% not established by Sit Sai Hang. The Sit family did not invest in the company and does not have any shares." Later, the 4 artists went on stage one at a time to sign the contract. When Fala mentioned her success in becoming a singer, the happiest ones were her parents, she suddenly teared up and successfully stole the limelight.

Afterwards, Fala explained why she teared up, she denied that her new company is established by her boyfriend, but when asked if she's sure her boyfriend didn't invest in the company? She stuttered: "I'm not sure, have to ask Herman. (It was said that you signing with Star Entertainment is a way to help stand up for your boyfriend who lost his position in Neway?) No, it has nothing to do with other people." As to her boyfriend losing his position in his own family business? Fala said: "Don't judge people like that. It's a big company, rumors will affect their company. The Sit family is very nice, don't try to damage their brotherly relationship. (Do the two brothers talk?) It is not convenient for me to talk about other family issues." As for Jade who got the limelight stolen from her, she said: "I am just making music, not thinking too much. (Fala is first sister?) It's good, everyone is first sister."

Steven Ma:The Bitter before the Sweet

Steven Ma entered the industry through his participation in the 1993 singing competition, began filming tv series in 1995, and is now a popular TVB siu sang. The series he was in all maintain a certain standard in ratings. The currently airing series, "Ghost Writer", has garnered an average rating of 30 points. Although it is pitted against World Cup, it still has audience support, this evinces he does exert a certain pull in viewership.

Steven's accomplishments in his career notwithstanding, he has in actuality endured quite a bit of hardship. Forced by stark reality, he was well-behaved and obedient from young, never causing his parents to worry over him. He entered the industry, and after five years of hard work, he already had the ability to enable his father to take early retirement so that he could concentrate in taking care of Steven's mother, who had nasopharyngeal cancer. It is precisely his mother's illness that had Steven, young as he was at a tender age of 6 years old, tasted the pain and suffering brought on by diseases and death.

Despite the family poverty-stricken circumstances, the disposition of his disease ridden mother remained positive; his father utterly devoted to her. In his eyes, his mother is the paradigm of a heroine (女中豪杰), while his father, a real man of the world. (江湖好汉) His attitude towards marriage is greatly influenced by his parents; marriage to him means sticking to each other through thick and thin, for better or for worse, taking care of and loving each other for a lifetime.

How about letting you experience the taste of bitter from young? Bitter before sweet! Just like Steven Ma.

Because of his mother's illness, he was in and out of hospital since six years old. Queen Elisabeth Hospital (QEH) became his second home at that time. He looked upon the compassionate attending physician as 'uncle'. At any time, he would see the adjacent bed patient checked in walking upright but checked out lying horizontal, even at such a young age he had already been exposed to an overload of life and death circulation. He already knew: "Life is very bitter." And even uttering it now can still impart an astringent taste to his lips.

When grown up, he suddenly realized that an aspect of him was a complete vacuum because of his early entry into the workforce. "That youthful frivolity and recklessness, they had nothing to do with me." Thinking back, Steven recounted his early life experiences: "Grade 9 (Form 3), school ended at 3:07 pm; spent an hour doing homework; 6 pm, sold ice cream at 星光行 until 12:30 am when it closed. The next day, school started at 7:15 am. Going to work everyday, earned about a thousand dollars or so. During summer break, worked around the clock, and earned 3 thousand dollars." He was extremely overjoyed. Because he knew that life was tough, he paid for his own school fees, books, shoes and socks.

"Even though exhausted, but was young, so treated it as physical exercise. From young I had always been very thoughtful, a very discipline person. And well aware of my own bottom line." Now at 38 years old, he more than ever will never permit himself to be reckless, "because as youngster if you did something wrong, your family may still be able to forgive you". As such, he would occasionally let himself roam free within the realm of his own thoughts, and be absorbed in his own world; "contented to just imagine."

Diligently maintains a balance of equilibrium

After graduating high school, he worked as a clerk in a publishing company, and was very mature for his age. Those days of bar hopping for young people seeking intoxication? He never had them. He preferred discipline and order. In 1993, after five years of working, it was with a sense of pride he told his father to retire from his job. His father is 70 years old now; that he is in good health gives Steven his greatest gratification.

"I don't like surprises. I worry I can't stand them. For my birthday, I don't want my friends to spring a surprise party on me." He strives hard to maintain a balance of equilibrium on his emotions. "I'll not let myself be extremely happy or extremely sad." All things must have their originating causes. "I've had enough of them during my mom's illness. 3 o'clock in the morning, because of seizure was sent to emergency care; after urgent treatment, everything was fine again. Since I was six years old until 28, I constantly endured this feeling of impotence, fear and heartache."

In 1999, his mother died of illness; his whole inner being felt hollowed out. "After she left, I got into the habit of not answering the phone. I had the ringer turned off." The prior fear cloaked him like shadow just like it did before. "Every time something happened to her, I became very scared; but if she got well, I became extremely happy." For a prolonged period, the emotional ups and downs in him fluctuated immensely. And then his mother passed away. "During those days, I never shed a drop of tears; I was like a robot." He took to drinking, got drunk and slept it off. Some friends were disturbed by his abnormal behavior and sought him out to talk to him so that he could release his suppressed feelings. Only then did he cry bitter tears. "From 2000 to 2001, my emotional condition was very erratic."

One turbulence after another

His emotional state besieged; depression insidiously crept in; admit it or not, it came knocking on his door anyway. He consulted a mood swings therapist who prescribed a blood serum drug for re-balancing. However, he was more susceptible than other people to its side effects. "I vomited so badly." And soon a new problem arrived before the old was solved. Before the depression was fully treated, anxiety attacks looked him up. With much experience, Steven recounts: "When the attack sets in, the heart turns 'cool' (心就會涼一涼(?)), after which, a crippling feeling of unease, begins to panic and hyperventilate, the hands turn numb, and the head feels woozy. Had sought out emergency care several times."

I, too, have suffered panic attacks in the past but compare to Steven's symptoms, they truly paled in significance. He tries to explain further: "I've experienced having my heart beat extremely fast. So rapidly my whole body trembled from top to bottom." He was so scared he could only lie down on the floor and dial 999. After a 24 hour ECG monitoring in the hospital, it was discovered that two of his heart blood vessels are congenital short circuits.

In the past, he used to bottle up his feelings. He self-analysed that when young he must have had a slight case of withdrawal. "My eyes never looked directly at other people, only looked at the ground. Detached from worldly affairs, and withdrawn from worldly struggles. Got A for student conduct. " He kept his love buried in his heart, and was not too good at expressing it. If going deeper, it was probably due to low self-confidence and the fear of rejection. But then he would ask himself: "I have a warm family, so no reason to feel inferior."

Parents are the classic husband and wife model

Steven's memory is extraordinary. He can even vividly remember the time when he was two years his mother almost dropped him because she dozed off; the time in the kindergarten when he threw a fit looking for his mother; his deceased maternal grandfather with his heavily made up face lying inside his coffin. He only wants to tell me that during that time how much he enjoyed been lost in his own world, and that he did not know how to communicate with other people. "I felt that I couldn't do things as well as other people. Only in solitiary activities was I better, such as: arranging the books on the shelves in the library, so very neatly and orderly. Also learned to draw; I was a member of the Arts Society."

Rumors had it that Steven will soon marry Vivian, his girlfriend of seven years. He explains: "All this time, our dating was very low-key. Seven years already, no reason not to know acknowledge her. But the acknowledgment brought on a lot of ensuing consequences, many people called me up offering their help to assist us, including hotels and wedding photography." He adds: "I will for sure get married, but I never said I would do that next year." Even his younger sister when she read the report retorted: "Ah Goh, aren't you being a bit too secretive?" (T.note: Re: An earlier news article reported that Steven will marry girlfriend next year, which he has since clarified to be erroneous.)

He wants to apply his parents' formula of living together through thick and thin, and their mutual cherishing of each other for himself. Steven also has great expectation and hopes for marriage. "In my eyes, they were the classic husband and wife, the most perfect husband and wife. All those years Mom was sick and suffered physically, but she was always optimistic. Dad stood by her and got her through. Her cancer relapsed three times, towards the end she couldn't see or hear. For a stretch of four years or so, the whole family had to rely on the writing board to communicate with Mom. The initial radiotherapy was extremely harmful to the patient. Its side effects were pervasive. Once applied, good or bad tissues would be adversely affected. The tissues next to the pituitary gland were damaged by the radiation causing the joint of the mandible (lower jaw) to lock up as it became increasingly tighter and tighter. No matter how much force was applied, it was impossible to get the mouth to open up. Mom had no way of eating." The doctor recommended drilling a hole into the stomach to infuse nutrients into her.

Couldn't Bear to see Mother die of Starvation

The extremely strong mother having undergone all kinds of torments refused to have the operation. The doctor said: "Without the operation, she will die of starvation within a week." As her son, how could Steven bear to see his own mother slowly dying of starvation? He could not stop his tears from falling. His mother felt her son's pain, and helplessly she agreed to the aperture operation on her stomach. "Maybe her body was too weak because during the post operation, she caught pneumonia and passed away." Eleven years have since elapsed but that feeling of guilt has imprinted into an indelible pain in his heart. During his recounting, his eyes turned red and brimmed with tears; he blames himself: "After she passed away, I could still cope at first but later I collapsed; my demons had stayed inside me; always blaming myself. Maybe Mom could have had lasted a few more days."

Because his mother was sick for 22 years, Steven understands more than ever the significance of good health and life. "I've never sympathized with suicide victims; only feel that they were pitiful, since they had the courage to commit suicide, why then didn't they have the courage to face life? Death is not scary, but I am horrified to see some parents carrying their kids seeking death. Your death will end it for you, but you leave the pain behind to the ones who love you." Regarding the suicide news (especially the students') the media tends to milk it to the max. "When watched by impressionable kids, its imparts an adverse influence on them. They really think they could use death to control their parents. I hope the HK news media can understand this."

He also advices those who are considering killing themselves that before doing it to first "visit a terminal patients ward, to see how these patients struggle to live, and how they undergo the whole gamut of treatments all for the very hope of seeing the world for an extra minute, or to live another day."

Extra strong sense of time

Because of a sickly mother, the connection between Steven and the illness demon cannot be detached. He is not scared of death, and he understands the pain from illness. "If truly fallen sick, no option to panic. If sick, you have to face it positively, see it as character building, could only use a positive attitude to accept it. Like my Mom, she accepted her illness and was very strong. She was a great mother. She was always smiling even when radiation made her hair all fall off. It hurt us to her as such but she treated it as nothing. "There was once when Mom was eating, halfway through she put down the rice bowl and went to the bathroom. After a while she came out wiping the trace of blood from the corner of her mouth. Seeing her son's concern expression, she calmly answered: "It's nothing!" Steven rushed into the bathroom and only then did he see the traces of blood that stuck to the sink. Turned out that she had just vomited blood. That is why Steven described his mother as a heroine.

During his second older sister's pregnancy, she had Toxemia. When she arrived at the hospital, her whole body was swollen up, and the fetus was asphyxiating. He uses his hands to illustrate: "A seven month old baby, only slightly bigger than my palm. When born, had a heart surgery immediately; at the time, scared to death, but now, already this big." His younger sister also has cancer but is in remission right now. Like their mother, she has an optimistic attitude. "That's why I don't want my mood to swing high and low. Strive for moderation per the Doctrine of the Golden Mean. I don't want to go through too much excitement." He takes an extraordinary strong stance on time. He is annoyed if someone is tardy. "Maybe they don't have the same concept on time. Because a minute can save a human life. With my own eyes, I saw Mom in seizure. Within a minute, the doctor came and promptly gave her a shot, and she was fine again. If within that one minute the doctor did not appear, she would have been dead. I understand the significance of one minute. I always respect time."

Risk-aversive in finance management.

The media says he has a girlfriend with a half-billion dollars net worth. Steven's point of view is: "What's her net worth, I've no idea. Though I was not born of a rich family, but after working hard, I now at least have my own vehicle, flat and money. And my lifestyle is stable. But some people said my education background is poor." Though he did not come right out with it but reading between lines, he was slightly put out: "Although I only graduated high school but I never give up on learning. I enrolled in the history course offered by a public university, and did self-study for two years. The more I studied, the more I became alarm. I felt that I have so much room for self-improvement."

He has a strong sense of family. Currently, he is living with his family, including his father. Whenever he needs a quiet time for meditation, his family and girlfriend will oblige him with their understanding and consideration. "I'm very thankful to her. She is also very busy with her own work, always flying here and there. We have no conflicts. I,too, look forward to the day we can tie the knot. But before marrying, one must think it through carefully such as: their love for each other, and the degree of tolerance for each other. I'm an emotional person with fluctuating mood swings, very perceptive; aside from handling work, not all that realistic towards daily life, human life and life itself; more self-absorbed. And she is tolerant of my personality. I would not be able to stand someone who wants to constantly control me. I need a lot of personal space." And his so-called space is to just let him be alone inside a room for quiet time with a desk, a television and internet.

Seven years already, their dating has already passed the passionate love stage. He, on the contrary, rather appreciates the feeling of a long flowing kind of relationship. "No need to be anxious ma. Anyway, I'm not going to find another." He is also fond of children. He will certainly be a good father in the future.

When he first entered the industry, the recording company told Steven to conceal his public housing residency background. Later, Chiu Chung Man (趙崇文) said to him: "Grew up in the pubic housing, and yet have such accomplishments, should feel proud instead. Whether a person is successful or not is unrelated to his background." After a journey of 38 years, Steven is without regrets. Since his teenage foray into society he has been self-sufficient and has fulfilled his filial obligations. His self-evaluation of himself: "I guess it's all right lo! (都算系咁喇!) I will not compare myself with other people; whether they have more of this or less of that; somehow or another, people always have to pay. I'll not envy other people; it would be better to do well by myself. Let my inner light shines to the max, and live life wonderfully. Then at least, I did not live in vain. And in the end, to leave with a smile."
