R&B singer Rihanna has been embroiled in a controversy after a Barbadian minister gave her a free piece of real estate while poor residents struggle to cope nearby. Minister of Housing and Lands Michael Lashley gifted the ''Umbrella'' hitmaker a plot in the upmarket area of Apes Hill as a token of gratitude for boosting international interest in the Caribbean island nation.
However, Government Minister Gline Clarke has lambasted the decision - insisting a rich pop star has no right to garner free land while other Barbadians live in poverty, reports the Daily Star. "Why is the government paying millions of dollars for land for someone who's already making millions?" he asked.
The 'Russian Roulette' singer is not satisfied with being a globe-conquering pop star and is ready to turn her attention to the screen in 2010.
She said: "There is so much I want to do. I would love to try my hand at acting. I just want to keep getting better."
Rihanna, 21, is also keen to get involved with fashion and is keen to design her own clothing range.
The pop beauty - who is renowned for her daring and racy choice of outfits - added: "I'll hopefully be making movies and having something to do with fashion as well as making music in years to come."

As well as her acting plans, Rihanna has made a number of other resolutions for the coming year.
Her priority is to correct her horrendous time-keeping.

Singer Rihanna is upset as she won't be able to do her usual raunchy stage show in Abu Dhabi on New Year's Eve because the organisers have told her to dress "conservatively".
"Rihanna is tearing her hair out over what to do. She wanted to put on her most eccentric and provocative show here. A huge part of her show is her sexy stage gear.
"But the dress code in Abu Dhabi does not encourage excessively revealing outfits," contactmusic.com quoted a source as saying.
Now Rihanna, 21, and her team are busy devising a new show complete with modest outfits which don't show off too much of her body and won't offend audiences in conservative Abu Dhabi.
In a 20/20 interview airing Friday, Rihanna offers a graphic account of the fateful Feb. 7 confrontation with her then-boyfriend Chris Brown – including the terrifying blankness that seemed to come over him as he assaulted her.
She says all she kept thinking was, "When is it going to stop? When is it going to stop? He had no soul in his eyes. Just blank. He was clearly blacked-out. There was no person when I looked at him."
The fight, she says, started when Brown received a text message from another woman while they were driving away from a Grammy Awards party.
"I caught him in a lie, and he wouldn't tell the truth. And I wouldn't drop it," Rihanna tells Diane Sawyer in the interview, portions of which aired Friday morning on Good Morning America.
"I couldn't take that he kept lying to me, and he couldn't take that I wouldn't drop it … It escalated into him being violent towards me. And it was ugly."
How ugly? "I was battered, I was bleeding, I was swollen in my face," she says.
Their Love Spelled Danger
She felt trapped. "My next option was to get out of the car and walk, start walking in a gown and a bloody face," she says. "I didn't have a plan. That whole night was not part of my plan."
Rihanna believes now that the passionate love affair between the young couple – she was 20 at the time, he was 19 – was an unhealthy one. "The more in love we became, the more dangerous we became for each other, equally dangerous," she says. "Because it was a bit of an obsession."
She also discusses how she eventually broke things off with Brown, and how she feels about him today.
"Love doesn't go away right away," she says. "He didn't accept that very well. Obviously he didn't want us to be apart. But I had to make a decision for me."
Does she hate Brown now? "No, I don't hate him at all," she says. "I actually love and care about him. I want him to do well, have a great career, have a great life and grow up. And just take this as something you had to go through to grow up and learn."

A New York tattoo parlour is facing a fine for allowing Rihanna to ink her initials and an umbrella design onto three members of staff.
The Umbrella hitmaker was spotted wielding a needle at Manhattan's EastSide Ink in July (09), and reportedly etched her personalised image ontothree resident artists.

The business was issued with a citation by the New York City Departmentof Health for "operating with an unlicensed tattoo artist on site".
Now the store's owners are facing a fine of between $200-$2,000 (£125-£1,250), according to Tmz.

Actress Megan Fox has topped Heat magazine's ‘Most Envied Bodies 2009’ list. The Transformers star was followed by Girls Aloud singer Cheryl Cole, who came second.
"We've always known that Megan Fox is a hit with men, but we were surprised at how quickly she has made an impact on women- they consider her to have the most covetable celebrity body,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Julian Linley, editor of the magazine, as saying.
But despite having the most desired body, Megan apparently has a phobia of looking at herself, telling Film.com, "I usually don't watch myself, I don't watch playback, I don't look at still photos, I have a phobia of it."
Julian Linley added, "It's really refreshing to see Cheryl Cole beating curvy bikini goddess Kelly Brook to second place, and for the Brits to make the top ten, alongside Jennifer, Angelina, Beyonce and co."
