Sammi Cheng laments that the government has no concern for artists’ privacy

Yesterday, Sammi Cheng accepted an interview with Commercial Radio to promote her new Mandarin album. Regarding the issue of Fiona Sit being secretly photographed in her house and how upset she was, Sammi said that she can certainly empathize with Fiona, as she herself was secretly photographed in the past as well. She indicated that it is a shame how the government does not care about the privacy of artists in the entertainment circle: “Since the time that I was secretly photographed in my own home, I’ve been like a ‘bird startled by an arrow’….when I buy a house, I don’t consider whether it has a nice view or not anymore because it doesn’t matter – the shades are always closed anyway and the lights are always on. My electricity bill is a lot more expensive as well!” With regard to Fiona only wearing her underwear at home, Sammi indicated that it is no big deal, as the home is supposed to be the place where one feels the most comfortable and relaxed – in fact, she herself once forgot to close the shades when she was changing and was lucky that no one saw her. In a show of support for Fiona, Sammi said: “She shouldn’t feel overly upset or guilty because she did not do anything wrong – the magazine and its editors are the ones at fault. Of course, as a woman, there will be some embarrassment over this kind of thing – I was like that too back when it happened to me.”

Sammi also pointed out that if the person being secretly photographed were a high-ranking government official or other political figure, the government would surely create a law against it. She laments that artists are always neglected when it comes to privacy, yet they are expected to always ‘be proper’ and not do anything wrong: “I understand that as an artist, certain things ‘come with the territory’ whether we like it or not and that people will naturally be curious about our lives. If we’re being photographed while working or during work hours, then fine – but in the privacy of our own homes and during our own personal times? Absolutely not! Since the government doesn’t implement any laws with regard to this, there is a ‘grey area’ where people think that secretly taking photos of someone is not invasion of privacy and is not a crime. All we can do as artists is close all the windows and shades in our homes.”

Sammi Cheng and Andy Hui have a chance of reconciling

Sammi Cheng went to Taiwan yesterday to promote album <<信者得愛>>. Local reporters still asked about her relationship with ex Andy Hui, Sammi said: "At this moment, we are really very good friends. Although at this stage we're not love partners, but it's hard to say for the future." She expressed she's already 38 years old and cannot be willful with love. If a good person appears, she would cherish. As for she cannot talk too much about it since Andy has a girlfriend? Sammi joked: "It's too complicated!" Sammi Cheng is moved after visiting Qinghai quake victims

The day before yesterday, Sammi Cheng and Nick Cheung went to Xining (in Qinghai) to visit quake victims at a few hospitals in the area. The quake victims were very happy to see them and recounted for them their own stories of survival, which at one point, brought tears to their eyes.

With Qinghai’s high altitude (7500 feet above sea level), many people were worried about Sammi’s health prior to her trip, especially since she has asthma. Sammi indicated that when she and the rest of the crew arrived in Xining, their guide was worried about their ability to adapt to the conditions and kept asking if they felt ill. One of the male reporters in the group felt a numbing sensation in his arms and legs and had to be treated. In addition, Sammi’s assistant developed a massive headache almost immediately upon arrival and was not able to sleep all night. Sammi herself also had a minor reaction to the high altitude, as she felt her heart beating faster than usual, but luckily it got back to normal after a little while.

Sammi felt that her visit to Xining did not have a major impact, however the quake victims were extremely happy to see her and were moved by the compassion from their comrades in Hong Kong. While listening to one of the quake survivors recount his story and the heroic actions of others, Sammi was moved to tears.

Sammi also expressed that she learned from this trip how lucky they are to have food to eat. After the visit, when the group went to have dinner, she ate a simple dish consisting of tomato and eggs – even though she got an upset stomach afterwards, Sammi said that after seeing the devastation from the quake and so many people not having food to eat, the little bit of discomfort she suffered was nothing in comparisons.

Yesterday, as Sammi prepared to head back to Hong Kong, she developed a headache as well as a severe cough, possibly due to the extremely cold weather in Xining. Though she arrived home physically exhausted from the plane and car rides, she felt that the trip was worth it, as she was able to bring some comfort to the victims. As for her thoughts about the trip, Sammi expressed that her visit to the intensive care unit at Xining’s hospital where many of the quake victims were in critical condition moved her the most.
